Let me see if my early Camaro memory banks are still operative...
A BBC with SBC frame stands will mount the engine higher in the subframe. There shouldn't be an issue with the power steering. The biggest issue with using SBC stands with a BBC is the hood clearance. You may have to run a flat Corvette intake to clear the hood. Unless you are going to run a cowl hood, then it'll be fine with a standard-height intake. The manual crossmember will work with an auto. Chevy was brilliant in this regard. They used the same trans mount for autos and manuals, and they drilled numerous holes in the subframe legs to accomodate the different transmissions. With the th400, you'll just have to slide the crossmember back to the next set of holes.
