When I was 16, I had an 80 model Firebird with a destroked 400SB. (350 rods and crank, decked, .0030+) 3:08 single traction rear. .. but .. I swear, if that car had wings it would fly. It would pull hard for as long as you held it.

I think the 3:08 was dad's way to keep me under control.

Idea - If this is going to be for your son, you might take a look at the GM Performance parts 350 / 290hp crate engine. For about $1800 you can get one shipped to your door. Yes, it's a crate motor but you'd know it's good in the bottom end. aluminum intake, HEI, headers, 650 or so Holley and you're good for 325hp easy. They run something like a 222 (?) cam in it, 4 bolt mains, etc. It's a pretty strong old motor. It would be tough to build it for that same $$.

Just a thought.
