Not sure about in a 396 but my brother had a 427 with peanut port heads and we put the Comp cams XR286R street roller in it and it ran really well. Was 10:90's with turbo 350 and 3.73 gears in a 70 nova. We have used that same grind in 454's and a 496 with good results everytime. Not sure what compression ratio your looking at but like with any motor the larger the c.i.d. the less compression you can run with the same cam. The 496 was 9.6 to 1 and went in a 79 camaro and ran 10.0-9.90's on motor. The part number for that cam is 11-772-8 if you interested in it.
