In the old days this is how tonneau covers were installed. The perimeter of the bed had the male half of the snap screwed into the sheet metal. The female half of the snap was fastened to the cover. There weren't any support bows, just the cloth naugahyde stretched over the bed.
Same principle was applied to roadsters that ran at the lake beds. The middle of the tonneau had a zipper so either the entire cockpit could be covered, or the driver side could be unzipped/unsnapped.
