The most common lifting points are the holes in the heads like rh rear and lh front. Also common are the last intake manifold bolts on the front and back some use a plate bolted to the intake manifold placed where the carb would normally be.Now for the stand have you checked with some stores known for lower prices, like Norhtern tool or harbor freight. Also you could look in summit or jegs and price a stand there. They are not real expensive. Now on to the paint questions I think there is such a thing as you called for a high heat primer. If you have some paint left on the engine you won't need it but if it is bare cast you will need some sort of primer on there to make it last. The main thing is to get it super super clean so the paint or primer will adhere properly. In my opinion there is not much thing prettier than a clean fresh orange small block ,unless it is a fresh painted orange big block. jim
