There were at least six different L6 starters that I'm aware of and not all take that brace .

I don't think GM put on anything that wasn't important as " extra " parts reduce the profit margin .

That being said , I know that often the holes don't quite line up ~ you can egg shape the hole in the bracket with a rat tail file to make it work .

Typically only the heavy duty (longer Field Coil) starters use these but I'd add it to any engine I had just as a prophylactic measure .
