True, but when these trucks were built they were primarily for farm, ranch or industrial use. Most back roads were dirt, gravel, caliche or full of pot-holes (still are in some cases) so a brace may have been a safeguard.

These days, with most of them used as leisure or fun and on paved roads it's not a necessary item unless one wants to be period correct.

My 68 GMC with 250 six three speed was completely original when I got it from a rancher friend and didn't have one.
