Crossmember removal with the engine in place

I'm intending to swap a clean, painted, disk brake front end into the '68. Obviously, I have to unhook the bottom end of the front motor mounts from the x-member to do so. I'd leave the top of the mount attached to the frame, then put a come-along between the frame rails. If I don't support the motor from above, will the frame horns roll under and/or splay out?

I know the better option is to do the suspension work with the motor out, but that's in the cards anytime soon. What have you guys done here? Thanks.
