Look for some 2.73 gears. They were common in the late 70's and early 80's before overdrive came out. They often sell for less than the other gear options. With 2.73's, 4th gear will act like an overdrive and 1st gear actually becomes usable to start off in. I get about 15 mpg with my 72 GMC 4x4. It's got 3.08's, 350 engine and a 4 speed manual.
