I cant say for sure, I'm not an engineer. Why do ball joints and tie-rod ends feel stiff when new, and we replace them when they move freely?
My first tow truck, a 56 Chevy with straight axle front end, used to wear out king pins every few years, and no shops wanted to replace them so I learned to do them myself. Old timers who taught me all I know about wrenching always said you want that sh** tight instead of loose. I always took their word and its always got me through. To each his own, but I dont trust books as much as experience. Thanks to growing up in my dad's full service gas station back in the 60's, and paying close attention to my elders, I can proudly say when it comes to working on the older stuff, I never have a job come back on me. The new stuff, well thats a crap shoot lol
