As far as the rivets, if you have access to a cutting torch that is the fastest way to knock the head of the rivet off then knock the rivet through. If not a cut off wheel and making little X marks in each rivet, then using a chisel to break off the little bits of the head is pretty easy. Don't waste your time drilling or grinding away on them.
