Changing the column is fairly easy and you don't need a garage to do it. Don't know what it would take to install cruise on your truck but the only part of column involved with the cruise is one wire from the turn signal stalk to engage it that is independent from the turnsignal harness. A cruise switch can also be mounted on dash rather than the column if you prefer.
