The later engine has some strong advantages. Roller cam for one, and better seals. Install a set of Vortec 305 heads from an L30 equipped truck and a carby intake and you'll make plenty of power. Downside is it takes a lot to make an impressive 305. Even if you build it to 400 hp, which is impressive on a 305, people still say "Yeah, but it's a 305." And it will require a different flywheel and possibly the electric pump as mentioned above.
If you can locate a 283 crank and an inexpensive set of pistons then you could build a budget 302 with the 327 block. Everyone Ooohs and Ahhs when you say you've got a 302. I bought a set of cast 9:1 pistons pistons from a company in AZ in the early '90s. Can't remember the company I bought them from but the pistons were Hy-Duty brand.
