Not that I am any kind of expert on Cams but I notice many people these days want the lopey cam sound and go about getting it wrong.
Many a decent engine has been made into scrap on account of someone NOT in the know thinking high lift numbers will get you lope.
So you get many people running upwards of 500 lift with stock 76 cc heads and a small runner with flat top pistons....this is a recipe for a turd plain and simple.
Not only will it not make power in the specified rpm range but youll be spending all your time at the gas pump do to failing to understnad flow.
Honestly I have tested this theory out enough that its nolonger a theory at all .
You can stay conservative in lift and get all the lope you want just find the right LSA
for your engine.
The higher the number say , 112 LSA is far less agressive than say 108 LSA which will have the lopey idle.
Its also woth noting that its not one cam fits all engines, whats a radical cam in say a 327 wont be so radical in say a 400.
Duration plays its part in lumpy idle aswell and i urge everyone purchasing any cam to call the manufacture and ask for real duration numbers at 50 not the advertised duration which 9 times out of 10 is well just flash for parts counter guys to sell cams.
In this day and age it boggles the mind why anyone building up an engine would not call and get a custom ground cam for exactly what they want.
Most companys will do this for $20-40 extra dollers if not cheaper.
And now we get the abomanation series of cams the "Thumper Cams" .lololololol
These cams are equivolent to owning a honda civic and putting a full 3 inch exhaust with a fart cannon muffler on so it sounds ticked off.
I assure you a civic with this mod alone is only ticked off at the owner that lost it miles per gallon do to no backpressure and torque loss around town.
But I am from a different group than most, I would rather my vehicle look like crap and look slow and mundane but scream like a teenage girl at a justin beiber concert.
After all what would you rather have happen ?
You catch a redlight in your 1968 camaro ss with your lumpy sounding cam and everyones looking like ooh ahhh so strong until the light goes green than a guy in a truck that looks like it just came off the field from feeding the cows blows your doors in because he simple had his combination right?
Dont get me wrong I understand wanting lopey cams on a budget but really isnt that being a poser?
If you want lope pick a cam that will work with some good heads that get your compression up and can flow with the duration and overlap, get the right springs to handle the lift and have an idle that isnt as impressive as when you nail it.
And just to show you I understand lopey idle heres my junk, ill square off with a vehicle running a thumper cam anyday in fact ill give 2-3 car lengths.
