I agree with lockdoc. These used a tapered turn signal cam gizmo for lack of better words that holds down on the bearing.

I once tried to install a spring to cure a wobbly steering wheel (felt like the top bearing was shot but it wasn't ) but it wouldn't work. Turned out all I had to do was loosen the column and pull it upward. That put more pressure in that area and no more slop.
