I'd try mineral spirits/paint thinner first. It's much more gentle and less likely to affect the paint than Goo Gone. I've messed up some stuff with Goo Gone that mineral spirits would not have affected. Apply liberally and give it time to work. I would not use a wire brush either. May take several applications.
