If you don't want to remove the paint as you say, do not use lacquer thinner or acetone. I believe methyl ethyl ketone will also remove the paint. WD-40, naphtha and lighter fluid should be safe to use. The paint thinner and mineral spirits I mentioned in my post above are safe, relatively inexpensive, not very volitile and readily available at Home Depot, Lowes and your local hardware store.
