I agree that it would be easier to swap the entire assembly.... however, I don't believe the axles will interchange... pretty sure 70 was the last year for 6 lug.
Would be nice if you could move up to 71-72 style 5 lug all the way around, and front discs...
Other option is to go with a 700R4 and keep your 3.73 gears...
