My trans guy has always told me to get the newest one I can. With the constant updates GM was doing on them through production, the newer ones will require less improvements from the trans builder and consequently be cheaper to overhaul and update.
That said, I try to get them out of full size vans. They kept the cable driven speedometer later than trucks did.
