I believe you can use either glass, but need the corresponding felt channel in the door. My 1960 has the metal frames which are roughly 3/8” in width. The felt channel in the door has a gap or slot about ½” wide. If there are no frames the felt channel would be close to the thickness of the glass alone.

From what I’ve read in the past, framed glass was made of safety plate (like a windshield) whereas non-framed side windows were made of tempered glass. Although over the years I had plenty of old cars without framed windows and I always had new flat glass cut by a local glass shop out of safety plate. They just sanded the edges smooth.
