You can build some real power out of a 292 (or even 250 for that matter), but it gets spendy to do it. You can build more power cheaper and more easily out of a sbc. Also, the 292 isn't going to be much more fuel friendly than a sbc, especially if it's built.

On the plus side of the equation, they run forever, and they are torquey enough to uproot a house.

I've always wanted to turbo one, but have never had the cash or opportunity at the right time.
