here in Utah, we usually get a letter from the DMV a few months after our plates expire. I ignore them, but generally the State is wondering about insurance. Our plates don't stay with the car and we are liable for them, so it's a good reminder to take off the plates if it's going to be out of service for a long while, or if it's sold. I would do the 'sell it to someone and then buy it back' thing if it were me.
