Re: oil gauge: what am I missing?
Doesn't look like you're missing anything to me.
The large nut on the back of the gauge is simply used to mount the gauge.
The small nut/fitting on the oil line should screw directly into the back of the gauge.
The factory used what is called a "double compression" or "threaded sleeve" type fitting that basically has the compression ferrule and nut all formed into one piece ... instead of two separate pieces as is common on most other compression fittings.
If yours is leaking, the compression ferrule part might be deformed and no longer sealing to the back of the gauge or to the line. Replacements are available as Weatherhead #6100x2, Edelmann #111200, or Everco #11A. Also look down inside the fitting on the back of the gauge where the tapered ferrule part of the nut seats. Make sure that is clean and isn't scored up or otherwise damaged.
