Did it start to melt on the part that is parallel to the plug or on the perpendicular part? If it's on the perpendicular part, try routing your wire further towards the back of the engine.
Alternately you could get one of those little kevlar boots. I have to have those for both #5 and #7 on my engine due to headers.
