As Ogre said, tire sidewalls make good pads and you can stack them. The photos/drawings in one of the truck goodie vendor's catalogs should give you some indication of how thick they should be. Just make sure that the lines of the bed rails line up with the lines of the cab as nothing looks half done like beds that aren't square and parallel with the beds. It seems to be a rockisilly thing to let the back of the bed droop an inch or so to make it look lower than it is and to me that looks terrible.
