For 850 miles that is a bit of a toss up. However, there is also the chance that you will put in the OD trans and decide you like the ride and mileage a whole bunch more. It is certainly a popular upgrade for a reason. The only other way to lower rpms is to drive slower, tow it, or change the rear gears. The trans swap is much easier than the gear swap if you plan to put the 4.10s back in after the trip. You could always also get another rear axle to swap in with lower gears which would be a pretty quick swap. Last of all, some good sound deadening could be a quick afternoon project and may help keep the noise down for what will be quite a long drive.
