You fried the ground connection internal to the ecu/wiring. This isn't the first time its happend, actually there is a thread from a few days back about the same issue. Its not really common, but its not really THAT rare.

You can hook the wire up to the case and use that as the ground. It should work fine, but there may or may not be other problems with the ecu or wiring that you'll run into in the future, if you don't know what caused the ground to burn out in the first place.
