Some filters have a spring loaded bypass valve which comes in handy if element is plugged. Not so handy if metal shavings are floating around. Not unusual for filter bypass to lift when cold engine started because oil is thick and element pressure differential is high; this allow the shavings free access to galleys and bearings.

My 1st choice would be new long block in your case.

If filter has no bypass I would consider reusing current short block if price dictates.
