Winner winner chicken dinner.
Took out the bleeders, poked a small zip tie into the hole it came out of, old fluid started dripping out. There was a gel like substance on the ziptie when I removed it, I guess it is congealed brake fluid. Put it all back together and was able to pull nice clean fluid from the MC through the bleeder with the vacuum.
I haven't finished re-bleeding everything so not done yet, but on the right track.
