Cool. I've always been a "bone stock" guy so I wouldn't go with the stainless, anyway (plus it's way more expensive). I plan to use this truck for work as well, though.
Not arguing with your experience, plus I've already pointed out that the '56's bed was black, but I just looked through a book I have (Motorbook's How to Restore Your Chevrolet Pickup) and it says "For those desiring to restore their trucks to factory standards, the bed wood and metal strips were painted the same color as the truck body." (pg 185)
This is how my dad's '68 is, though we always assumed it was repainted. We know the exterior has been repainted, but it's hard to tell if they shot the bed floor as well or not.
