Two thoughts,

1. If your DMV goes outside and checks it before you register it you are SOL. You are going to have to go to the DMV and have both VIN's ran through and apply for a new title/VIN. This can be a pain and if the seller doesnt want to help you, you may be in for a bad time.

2. If the DMV doesnt check it and it was titled in the same state, you may be fine, but then you will have to deal with it if you ever want to sell it. If you do get it in your name then you may be able to get a new title with a new VIN and all could be well.

Always check frame, VIN, glovebox SPID and title before buying. If the SPID is readable, you will know if someone is trying to sell you a cutdown longbed as a shortbed.

All depends on the DMV, could be painful, could be easy.
