X-pipes and H-pipes have shown to be worth power on dynos pretty much ever since someone thought of doing it. It helps merge high pressure pulse areas and improves scavenging on dual exhaust. You wouldn't need an X or H on a single exhaust so I'm not sure how you're wondering how it wouldn't help on true duals... They wouldn't even be around if they weren't working on dual exhaust.
