Jim, since you asked, I'll tell you how I do it. I'm assuming you also want free flowing as well. What I do is install 2 different types of mufflers to cancel out the high frequency and low frequency sound. I accomplish this by using a good quality glasspack such as Thrush and a good quality baffle type muffler such as Flowmaster. The Flowmasters do good at canceling out the low frequency sound and the glasspacks do good at canceling out the high frequency sound. For as quiet as possible, install long glasspacks or install 2 shorter ones in series.
I've done this on all my custom exhaust work and it always works out great. Only thing is you do end up spending a little more for mufflers but the results are worth it. You can also tune your exhaust. If you want more low frequency, you would use a baffle muffler with less baffles. If you want more high frequency, you would use a shorter glasspack. And yes, use an H pipe or X pipe as previously mentioned. That too cuts down on the noise and makes your exhaust less restrictive.
