You say rods meaning stick welder I assume. A stick welder isn't going to work at least not very easily The rod itself will be too thick to do what you need to do. I would not spend 150 bucks to get out one broken bolt. Another 2-300 bucks gets you a pretty decent 110v mig welder. You will find plenty of other uses for it especially with an old truck. Whatever you get make sure it uses gas and not just a basic flux core welder. Flux wire for sheetmetal or body work sucks.
