I know you can boil rubber in Wintergreen Oil. It should help return old hard rubber back to being flexible and remain that way even after cooling off. Used to use this trick on carb boots for 70's model Honda cb750s. You could also take the grommet out of the firewall and check to see if the plug will stay in. If it won't stay in it probably needs replaced. Probably the easiest and cheapest is to replace I think they're only $5 new or $20 for the set.
