That is absolutely the wrong way to remove any steering wheel. Especially one on a collapsible column. It will break the plastic pins in the steering shaft before the wheel comes off.

The correct way is to use a steering wheel puller as a couple of guys mentioned. If you have an Autozone or O"reilly store close by you can most likely "borrow" one by paying for their loaner and then returning it for a refund when you are done with it.
