I had a transmission filtre that was made with a screen-type material, and the screen side went toward the case (or "up") and the metal side went toward the pan (or "down").
I don't remember the brand of filtre, though -- sorry.
The next time I replaced the filtre, I bought the Dacron one (the sort of yellow-ish felt/fabric looking one), and it was installed with the filtre media "down" and the metal "up."
Were there instructions with the filtre?
