I would consider cutting access holes and then make a cover that could be screwed back into place. To hide the access holes I would have some carpeted panels made up to match the interior carpet and then attach those.
We had our upholstery guy make the carpeted panels up using a
good grade of boarding and attached matching carpet. We are using chrome trim screws with trim washers for attaching the carpet boards to the doors.
I am not sure if it is original or not but all of the doors on my son's Burb had carpet on the lower part of the doors.
