The transfer case from an '04 is not going to work in your '84. It would have what is known as "driver's side drop". Meaning that the out-put for the front driveshaft is on the driver's side, plus it would have an odd out-put because it is intended to fit a "fixed" differential of an independent suspension.
Yours needs passenger's side drop, but mating it to a regular rear wheel drive transmission may be tricky or at least costly.
