... I'd put some gas in a glass jar along with a paper towel and black tape and watch what is happening inside the tank. Some paper towels are like rags and others are like toilet paper. If you use the rag type, you might have luck snaring it with a hooked wire. ??
If the paper dissolves, I'd slap a cheap temporary inline filter on there before any muck gets in the carb, or you'll be pulling that too.
