I did this and worked well. You are limited on the pumpkin hitting the bottom of the wood as mentioned. Some have cut an opening in the bed floor center to allow the pumpkin to travel into the bedspace and take full advantage of a deep notch, but you will end up with a speed bubble, leather cover, flipped diff cover etc to make it look decent.
