You'll need a new shaft.
I think I have read that you can use a long shaft TH350 with the engine in the V-8 position, and the shaft length would end up being the same...but I do not know for sure....seems it would be too long then.
You can place the small block in the I-6 location and have plenty of room for the HEI, all the 4X4 trucks have it there stock. Then all you'll need is a 4X4 small block shroud and you'd be set.
