I must be lucky, because I never have a problem putting in the fuel pumps. I just put the rod in, put the rod on th lever of the fuel pump, and slide it up until the holes align. Then I start a couple of bolts to hod it in place. I've heard the bolttrick, but I didn't want to push a bolt through where it didn't go and mess up the block.
