I recently replaced my grill in my 78 stepside. One thing i noticed is that the grills are slightly tapered . Peaking in the middle from both sides. slightly V shaped if that explains it better. In other words straight alunumunm bars or rods may not work. Check out my review in the review catagory under billet grills this may help you with your design.
