I've learned not to ever say never definitively, so I'll qualify my statement by saying of all the semi-floating rear ends I've pulled down, I've yet to see one without any shims in place. That said, not really sure how you got one without any on either side. Seems it would be almost impossible to set up the ring and pinion without any at all. If it's been run that way for a while, you can count on a horrendous gear noise if you set it up properly due to the fact that the gears have the established wear pattern based on the way it has been up until now. Would love to know how this turns out. Will stay tuned in for further updates.
