Starter still needs to be set up properly if it's going to live. Should be a little piece of paper explaining it, and if they're nice, a couple of shims in the box. If not the shims should be at any auto parts store.

You might get lucky and find out that zero shims are required and it would have been OK if you had done nothing (as you haven't). But usually it needs a little help on direction or the other.
