it may help in preventing them from squashing out especially with the nut on the bottom. the rubber surfaces both sit against the frame and the flat steel parts are to the outside. that rubber sitting against the frame sure causes a lot of rust problems in the trucks where they sit. If a person could weld a small lip around the steel plate it would work to hold them in place. my thoughts on making them. on the originals there is a raised half lip around the hole, so when you put top and bottom together they interlock and they fit in the hole in the frame and the bolt goes up through. I would bore a hole in the rubber to be able to put an insert in to make the raised piece and the bore a hole through for the bolt
