Absolutely correct. All it takes is a transmission segment swap. Ridiculously easy to do with EFI Live or HPT.

I made an assumption that GM wouldn't add code for transmissions they knew they would never use in the car, but apparently I was wrong.

Yup. It really is as simple as flashing a 4L60E transmission segment into the LS6 PCM. I've also put together other LS combos that "never existed" and flashed them....5.3 with a manual....5.3 with a 4L80E, LS6 with a 4L80E
