I edited my post above... started to edit it and got caught up in work stuff before I hit save.

Another member did a detailed write up with pictures years ago (member "palfstep"), but I can't locate it now. If you can weld it can be done. You only really need to replace the front lower section of the 73-87 bed with a 67-72 section (for the 67-72 step to bolt up)... and drill a lot of new holes and weld up the old ones.
