I also agree, That your old factory springs that were in there have had 43 years of sag happening and probably over time may have lost 2 to 2-1/2 inches of height and now with the new springs equalling almost the same just pre made at 3inches it just dropped half an inch which is now not noticeable at all as you say..
You may need to add 2 to 2-1/2 inch drop spindles to get the now overall 3 inches you seek... JMO....
